Charles Baker

Mr. Charles Jack Baker, age 75 of Calhoun, GA died Wednesday afternoon, June 13, 2012 in Kindred Specialty Hospital in Rome, GA after three months of illness. Mr. Baker was born in Gordon County, GA on February 20, 1937, son of the late Joseph Carl Baker and Ruth Irene Seritt Baker. He grew up in Gordon County and attended the Sugar Valley School. He served in the Georgia National Guard for nine years and was employed by Collins Petroleum, Inc. in Calhoun, and prior to his retirement in 2007 he was the store manager for Basic Materials, Inc. in Calhoun. Charles looked forward to each spring when he would prepare the soil and plant his vegetable garden. He was well know for his gardening ability, and was always willing to help others establish their own garden. He always enjoyed being with his wagon train friends and their overnight camping trips. He served several years on the ministry team assisting Bro. Lamar Hand at Gordon Health Care with the weekly church services, and was a member of Faith Worship Center. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Long. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Charlotte Burns Baker to whom he was married for 52 ½ years; two daughters, Sandy Baker Long and her husband Jeffrey of Calhoun, and Sherry Baker Sloan and her husband Jason of Calhoun; three grandchildren, Katey Sloan, Luke Sloan, and Emily Sloan, all of Calhoun; and two sisters, Carolyn Bryant and Retha Smith, both of Calhoun. Two uncles, Jack Seritt and Barnett Baker, along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Charles Jack Baker will be conducted Saturday, June 16th at 3:00 PM from Calhoun Community Church, with the body being placed in state at the church from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour. Rev. Anthony Lombard, Rev. Jerry Rice, and Rev. Lamar Hand will officiate. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery with Rev. Steve Baker conducting the committal service. Active pallbearers serving will include Spencer Brown, Tommy Brumlow, Jimmy King, George Hutchinson, Ted Collins, Jerry Holsomback, Jack McGaskey and Phillip McDaniel. Honorary pallbearers serving include members of Faith Worship Center, employees of Basic Materials and Basic Ready-Mix Concrete, the ministry team of Gordon Health Care, and his camping and wagon train friends. The family of Mr. Charles Jack Baker will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday, June 15th between the hours of 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
