Emily Wells

Mrs. Emily S. Wells, age 89 of Ranger, Georgia; passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010 at her residence following several months of illness. Mrs. Wells was born on September 14, 1920 at Macon, Georgia. She is predeceased by her parents John T. Shealy and Lillian L. Shealy; by a brother, Col. William T. Shealy; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn S. and Clifford Vaughan and her loving husband of 61 years, Guy H. Wells, Jr. Emily met her husband while a secretary to his father, Dr. Guy H. Wells, Sr, President of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. They were married in 1938 and moved to Atlanta and then to Marietta; Cobb County, Georgia where they resided and raised their family.and were members of First Baptist Church of Marietta for 42 years. During this time, Emily was a wife, a mother, a homemaker and a volunteer. She volunteered for the American Red Cross where she taught first aid, home health and CPR. She was very proud of the fact that she was a recipient of the American Red Cross Humanitarian Award and WSB’s Shining Light Award. After her children were grown and at the age of 48, Emily went back to college where she received her Associate Degree of Nursing from Kennesaw State College. For 11 years she worked in Kennestone Hospital’s OBGYN Section and as an RN of Kennestne Hosital’s IV Therapy Department. When she received the Employee of the Month award, it was said “as she moves throughout the hospital, almost everyone knows her—She brings warmth of patient care to every floor.” After retiring, Emily and Guy moved to Gordon County(Ranger, Ga.) where they operated a “pick your own” blueberry farm. There they found a loving church community at Bethesda Baptist Church in the Red Bud community. She quickly became the one that everyone turned to if they needed anything. She was always there for others. Her daughter, Gwen states: I have never met anyone who knew Mom, that didn’t say she was the sweetest, most caring person they had ever met. She had a loving heart, an unbelievable energy and a selfless need to help others. All this she attributed to her love of God, her church and her family. Emily is survived by one brother, John T. (Jay) Shealy (Lynn) of Woodstock, Georgia; her son Guy H. Wells, III (Shirley) of Smyrna, Georgia; her daughter, Gwen Waters (Charlie) of Marietta, Georgia; her son, Gary S. Wells of Marietta, Georgia. Grandchildren: Heidi Anderson (Brad) of Norfolk, VA; Jason Wells (Kristi) of Pensacola, FLA.; Charles Woody Waters, (Olivia) of Newnan, Georgia; Lt. Col. Christopher Waters (Beth) of Williamsburg, VA and Joel W. Howell of Marietta, Georgia. Great grandchildren, Ellie, Woody IV and Gilliam Waters, Zane, Ella and Jasper Anderson and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Emily S. Wells will be conducted Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Bethesda Baptist Church in the Red Bud community with Rev. Wesley Hunt officiating. Active pallbearers serving will include; Terry Hopper, Brian Little, David Stokes, Ricky Brookshire, Joseph Williams and Joey Moore. Honorary pallbearers serving will include, Jerry Clements, Mike Fowler, Troy Casey, Brock Baxter and Danny Cochran. Interment will follow the service at the Haven of Rest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home Tuesday evening during the hours of 5 until 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethesda Baptist Church; Calhoun, Georgia or the Georgia Home Hospice; Adairsville, Georgia.
