Marie Leatherwood

Marie Ruth Brandt Leatherwood was called home to be with her Lord on January 10, 2012. She was born August 5, 1922 in Munson, PA, one of eleven children born to A.J. and Mary Brandt. She grew up in Mt. Holly, NJ. Marie attended Philadelphia College of the Bible, Philadelphia, PA and later used the teacher training received there as a teacher at Red Bud School. She met the “love of her life”, Bill Leatherwood during WWII while he was a soldier stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. Later after all her children were in school she became an LPN through training at Gordon County Hospital. She spent the majority of her nursing career in what she called the “Happy Department” – obstetrics. She had a deep love for life. One of her favorite interests was porcelain art painting. She was a founding member of the Georgia Porcelain Art Society. She also painted in other mediums, oil, acrylics, and water colors. She spent many days with pen in hand writing both poems and stories. She was an avid herb gardener and cook. Her family enjoyed many delicious meals through her efforts. Her spirit of giving abounded throughout the year, but culminated at Christmas. She especially enjoyed preparing shoe boxes for children given through Samaritan’s Purse. She was the heart of our home and will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family looks forward to the time when they will join her in Heaven. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Leatherwood, Sr., and their son, William Leatherwood, Jr. Survivors include a daughter, MaryAnn Kenemer and her husband Keith of LaVergne, TN; two sons, John Leatherwood and his wife Glenda, and Jim Leatherwood and his wife Cindy, all of Calhoun, GA; grandchildren, Nathan Leatherwood and his wife Anna, Andrew Leatherwood and his wife Mary, Mark Leatherwood and his wife Lora, Cary Brock and her husband Chuck, and Will Leatherwood; and great-grandchildren, Grady Leatherwood, Carter Brock, Everett Leatherwood, and Caylee Brock. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, January 14th from the Echota Baptist Church in Calhoun. In lieu of flowers, the Leatherwood family requests donations be made in Mrs. Leatherwood’s memory to the Gideon’s International or Samaritan’s Purse.
